Hair and fiber

Kolinsky sableWatercolor, gouache, fine oil detail

+ Springs back to a fine point, holds plenty of paint and releases it evenly.

− Expensive; acrylic and harsh solvents shorten its life.

SyntheticAcrylic, gouache, budget watercolor

+ Cheap, durable, easy to clean, animal-free; good snap for acrylic.

− Holds less water than natural hair; tips can curl or splay over time.

Hog bristleOil, heavy-body acrylic

+ Stiff, with split “flagged” tips that grip and push thick paint.

− No fine point; leaves visible brush marks; too rough for watercolor washes.

SquirrelWatercolor washes, mops

+ Very soft and holds a huge load of water for long, even washes.

− Little spring, so it is floppy for controlled strokes.
